Slaves in Alabama often attended the same church as their masters, while also maintaining their close-knit religious community—gathering in their quarters or in nearby, secluded areas. These gatherings sometimes grew into congregations. Formal records of these early religious communities are scarce, but some are documented. A few churches that were founded in Alabama before the end of the Civil War still exist today.
