The 2022 Netflix documentary “Descendant,” produced by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Production Company, tells the story of the Clotilda, the last known ship to traffic people from Africa to the United States and the experiences of Clotilda descendants in Africatown. After decades of decline, the Africatown Community in Mobile, Alabama, founded by Africans who were captives of that 1860 voyage, started its resurgence with the discovery of the scuttled schooner Clotilda in 2019.
